The 4 or 5 day program is based at Nicky Amazon Lodge Laguna Grande, which is located in the Cuyabeno National Park. This lodge offers the opportunity to explore the high part of the Cuyabeno River. It is perfect for people who want to visit the Laguna Grande, where it is possible to admire one of the particular ecosystems of the Amazon basin; the flooded forest or Igapo. The cabins are built in the traditional Indian style of the jungle. You can find the itineraries of our 5 days / 4 nights below.

[cbtabs][cbtab title=”Itinerary“]

DAY 1:

The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is the second largest reserve of the 45 national parks and protected areas in Ecuador. Your adventure starts in Lago Agrio (at 09h30), if you go by plane we will pick you up at the Lago Agrio airport (09h55).

After 1h15min by bus or truck we reach Tarapoa town, where we eat lunch. After lunch we go to the Cuyabeno Bridge, this is the main entrance to the Cuyabeno reserve. We travel down the river to our lodge. After two hours, our excursion into the rainforest can start. Along the narrow beginning of the river, we observe some species of monkeys and birds from very close.

When arriving at the Nicky Amazon Lodge, we have an introductory walk around the lodge. After dinner, our naturalist bilingual guide gives us a briefing on the upcoming activities for the next days. There is also a nightwalk for those who want to see the nightlife of the Amazon.

DAY 2:

After an early breakfast we start our journey, the brisk morning hours are the best time to see the rainforest’s thriving activity. We trek into the rainforest with our Naturalist guide who shares his wealth of knowledge. He also teaches us about how to live in the tropical rainforest and it’s fragile balance. The guide will explain the different uses of medicinal plants, which have been taught by the local ancestors for generations. We also find some species of amphibians, butterflies, snakes, birds, monkeys, centipedes and millipedes or any footprints of mammals in the trail.

After our walk we return to the lodge where we have lunch. After lunch we navigate along the Cuyabeno River and around the Kapok Island trying to find species of monkeys. We also have a good chance of seeing the freshwater pink dolphins (Inia geof-frensis and Sotalia fluviatilis) in the amazing river scenery.

Before dinner, we venture into the forest to find species of insects, spiders, tarantulas, snakes and colorful frogs. The nightlife of the Amazon is perfect for viewing small species and enjoying the nocturnal sounds of the jungle.

DAY 3:

We wake up early to have a good chance to spot some monkeys and birds. After breakfast, we follow the “taricaya” that means turtle trail to visit the Seoqueya Community, where some local families of the Sionas Indigenous group live. A member of the family shows us how they prepare the yuca bread which is called “Cassave”. The guide explains the local traditions and cultures from the past to the present.

After the visit we return to the lodge to have lunch. After lunch, there’s time to relax and enjoy the place. In the afternoon we go with our motor canoe upstream to visit the Laguna Grande. It’s an amazing lake where we can admire the flooded forest by black water or Igapo. It’s considered an ecosystem of the rainforest dominated by the famous Macrolobium trees which are homes of Epiphytes plants and birds. There is time to swim in the lake while we admire the spectacular sunset in the rainforest. Before we return to the lodge we venture downstream to search for Caimans (alligator family)and fishing bats.

DAY 4:

The last early activity is a short canoe excursion to enjoy the sunrise over the jungle. This is a good opportunity for bird watching. It allows us to create the last memory of this wonderful place. After breakfast, you have time to prepare your luggage for the trip back. We navigate upstream to reach the Cuyabeno Bridge. After the trip we get a box lunch. Our bus or pick- up takes us back to Lago Agrio. We arrive there at approx. 14h30. You can either take the bus or a plane back to Quito.

DAY 5:

For passengers going on the longer trip for 5days / 4nights: In the morning we will do a morning walk through the wilderness of the Amazon. In the afternoon there’s a canoe excursion admiring the wonderful landscape and a night walk in the evening.
